Eligibility Requirements

  • All applicants must have at least one year of clinical training (PGY-1) in an ACGME-approved training program. Certification or eligibility in a primary care specialty is preferred but not required.
  • Graduates of foreign medical schools must have current ECFMG certification.

Application Procedures

1. Applicants to the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Residency Program must apply using the School’s on-line application form.  Go to the Admissions Office home page, click on Prospective Students, then click on Application Instructions.  You will be directed to the on-line application from there.

Applicants to the full two-year program should select "Residency Programs" as their degree program and "MPH/Occupational Medicine - 2-year" as their track/division.  Only one application is required; the Admissions Office prepares duplicate copies so that the residency program and the MPH admissions committee can review applications separately and simultaneously.  Acceptance by the school’s MPH program is required for admission to the residency program.

Applicants who possess an earned MPH from an accredited US program and meet the requirements for the American Board of Preventive Medicine's Complementary Pathway may apply for a one year program. Applicants should select "Practicum Year Only - Occupational Medicine" as their track/division.

Residency applicants are not required to submit GRE scores; however, USMLE scores are required and MCAT scores may be submitted as well.  Non-native English speakers will be required to submit recent TOEFL scores.

Applicants who have not completed a full residency in a primary care specialty must request a "summative evaluation" be sent to this program from the director of their internship year training program.

2. ERAS - we are registered with the ERAS system and will also accept applications through that system. You are not required to use ERAS, but if you choose to do so, please note that in order to be considered for our program all applicants must also complete the application to the MPH program as outlined above.

If you are considering an application to our program, we would like to hear from you!  Please forward a copy of your curriculum vitae and a brief statement of your interests to Chris Brown, residency programs administrator; email cjbrown@jhsph.edu; FAX 410-614-1582.

Application Deadline

The deadline for applying to the Johns Hopkins Occupational and Environmental Medicine Residency is October 31

Interviews

Applicants selected for interviews will be invited in small groups to come to campus for a day-long visit.  The interview day comprises interviews with faculty, attendance at a residency seminar, a tour of the school, and lunch with current residents.  Interviews are scheduled during November and early December.  All occupational medicine residency programs have a voluntary uniform decision date of December 15.  Applicants will be notified on or shortly after this date of the decision of the OEMR Admissions Committee.
