This study, also known as Projahnmo-I (Project to Advance the Health of Newborns and Mothers) is a cluster randomized, controlled trial in a population of 480,000 in rural Sylhet, Bangladesh. The goal is to evaluate the impact of packages of obstetric and neonatal care practices, including community health education, provision of clean delivery, essential newborn care, and management of neonatal infections by first-line health workers, either in the home or at community clinics, on neonatal mortality rates and newborn care practices. This trial will inform the Government of Bangladesh and NGOs of the relative cost-effectiveness of these two models for delivery of neonatal and maternal health care services.
