Applying to the Residency Program

Eligibility

The GPMR residency training comprises PGY-2 and PGY-3. To be eligible to apply for the residency, physicians must complete at least one year of ACGME-accredited clinical training (PGY-1) in the U.S. prior to entering the residency. Although not required, many of our applicants have completed training in a primary specialty.

Transitional Internship

The program has one transitional internship (PGY-1) training slot offered jointly with Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown, N.Y., and applied for through the MATCH. Applicants for this internship position should at the same time apply one year in advance for the residency through the School's online application process (see below). Applicants who match would do a rotating internship at Bassett Healthcare prior to beginning the first year (PGY-2) of residency training at Johns Hopkins. Please contact us for more information about applying for the Bassett internship.

How to Apply

1. Apply to the residency program using the online application form that can be accessed at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Admissions Office webpage. Please go first to "Application Instructions" and be sure to read the instructions before beginning your online application.

Applicants to the full two-year program should select "Residency Programs" as their degree program and "MPH/Preventive Medicine—2-year" as their track/division. Only one application is required; the Admissions Office prepares duplicate copies so the residency program and the MPH admissions committee can review applications separately and simultaneously. Acceptance by the school’s MPH program is required for admission to the residency program.

Applicants who possess a recently earned MPH from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health may apply for just the practicum year, and should select "Practicum Year Only—Occupational Medicine" as their track/division.

2. ERAS - we have registered with the ERAS system this year and will also accept applications through that application system. However, you are not required to use ERAS, but if you choose to do so, please note that in order to be considered for our program all applicants must also complete the application to the MPH program as outlined above.

Additional Application Materials

In addition to the application materials required by the Admissions Office, please submit copies of the following items (as applicable to you):

  • USMLE scores
  • medical school dean's letter
  • ECFMG certification (foreign medical graduates)
  • summative evaluation of internship training from clinical program director (if you have not completed a full residency)

Application Deadline

Completed applications must be received in the Admissions Office by December 1 preceding the July start date. Applicants selected for interviews will be invited to participate in an interview day during January and February.
