In the U.S.—and increasingly worldwide—the system to protect human research subjects is based upon established ethical principals and legal requirements. In order for JHSPH to protect subjects and ensure compliance, a complex interconnected system of protections works to support the responsible conduct of human subjects research. At JHSPH, the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) is the term given to the array of School- and oftentimes University-wide protections that are in place to protect the welfare of human subjects in the research conducted by our faculty and students. - Know what research is subject to regulation
- Understand and follow the HRPP polices and procedures (P&Ps) for the conduct of human subjects research
- Acquire appropriate training and education for the responsible conduct of human subjects research
- Accept continuing responsibility for compliance through all stages of the research process
The Office of Research Administration (ORA) provides support to faculty as they seek funding for their research and helps to manage the results of that funding search as money flows to the University. They are responsible for compliance activities attached to the funding as well as faculty adherence to University policies. The Committee on Human Research (CHR) is the JHSPH institutional review board (IRB) and ALL research involving human subjects is required to be reviewed and approved by the CHR before any contact with human subjects or their identifiable information may be made. The Office for Research Subjects (ORS) provides administrative review and support for the CHR and maintains all of the HRPP P&Ps on its website.
