Graduate Summer Institute of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Welcome

Dr. Moyses Szklo
Program Director

We deeply appreciate your interest in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health's Graduate Summer Institute of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Our program has been in existence since 1983 and has trained hundreds of students from the United States and numerous other countries on all continents. The fact that many students return several times to our program attests to the excitement generated by our educational environment and to its varied and friendly atmosphere.

On this website you will find information about the courses we offer, as well as about logistical arrangements in connection with the program. As you will see, our courses cover a variety of themes. We offer courses on modern epidemiologic and biostatistic methods, including those related to special applications such as case-control studies, clinical trials, and health services evaluation.

We also offer courses in substantive areas such as infectious diseases and cancer; the use of epidemiologic methods in evidence-based decision-making; risk sciences and public policy; the management of epidemiologic studies; the teaching of epidemiology; and tobacco-control strategies.

Our summer courses are designed to provide the same depth and breadth as those given in our regular academic terms. Most of our courses offer academic credits, and thus have to undergo a stringent review by the School's Curriculum Committee. Students have the option of taking the majority of our courses either for academic credit or as a continuing education activity.

The program offers courses of varying durations so as to accommodate students who can take time off for the whole length of our program (three weeks) as well as those who can only stay with us for a shorter time. We even offer an intensive weekend course for students who wish to be introduced to research design and analysis but who have only weekends free.

We understand that you have a wide choice of summer programs to choose from, both in the United States and abroad, so we would like to thank you for giving serious consideration to Hopkins as the site for your intensive summer courses. The Departments of Epidemiology and Biostatistics share a long tradition of focusing on teaching, and many of their current faculty, several of whom teach in our Summer Program, have been the recipients of the Student Assembly's Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. Since the times of historical figures such as W.H. Frost and William Cochran, our departments have made important contributions to the science and the practice of epidemiology and public health. We hope to be able to welcome you in person at the start of our program and promise to offer you an inspiring educational experience.
